EPISODE 2: PIGGERY
 
Pigs are important sources of meat, they are the most efficient feed converter of all live stocks. Pigs are highly prolific and grow very fast. They can be managed through the system named below;
Intensive system
Semi-intensive system
Extensive system.
Pigs are reared mostly for their meats, manure and for income generation.
Breeds of pigs that are reared in West Africa are listed below;
1)      The landrace
2)      The large white
3)      West African dwarf pig
4)      The Hampshire
5)      The large black
6)      Polands
7)      Chila
8)      Tomworth
9)      Wessex saddlebacks.
10)   The duroc
CHARACTERISTICS OF PIGS 
1)      They are monogastric animals
2)      The sow  are highly prolific
3)      They are efficient feed converters
4)      They produce more meat than other animals
5)      They  are highly susceptible to parasite
PIG DISEASES
1)      Tapeworm (Platyhelminthes,  cestoda)
2)      Swine fever
3)      Anthrax (bacteria)
4)      Roundworm (nematode)
