EPISODE 5: SHEEP

 

Sheep are kept for the production of meat, wool and milk. Leather from hides of sheep is used to make gloves, jacket and shoes. Some tropical breeds of sheep are;

1)      West African dwarf sheep: hey are found in the  humid area of west Africa

2)      Fulani  ouda: they are found in the savanna zone of tropical Africa

3)      The yankasa and balami: they are found in savanna region of West Africa.

Sheep can be managed successfully under the intensive, semi-intensive and extensive system.

DISEASE OF SHEEP

1)      Bovine mastitis (bacteria)

2)      Pleuropneumonia (virus)

3)      Lice infestation (arthropod)

4)      Erosive stomatitis (bacteria).

Under health management, sheep should be dewormed and vaccine at the appropriate time.
